War on Hate

If you were to turn on the TV and flip to any given news channel, chances are it would be flooded with death that was provoked by hate. Our world is steadily being polluted by malice and prejudice. To counteract this hatred, we must band together against injustice.
Hate crimes are on the rise in the United States, especially after the 2016 election. 260,000 hate crimes were reported in 2017, although the number is believed to be severely higher. These acts of hatred include shootings, threats, and rallies to promote inequality and superiority on the part of Neo-Nazis and Alt-Right hate groups.
Just as the United States, as a nation, was overcoming great barriers of inequality, such as racial discrimination and gay
rights, the man who helped to guide all
this progression had served his terms.
President Barack Obama had so much kindness
to spread, which is seen through his work
with anti-bullying, same-sex marriage,
repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and the
advancements made to equalize all LGBT
citizens. Any political debates aside,
Obama was a fierce leader who believed in
civil rights and equal opportunity. His
love for humanity spread across all 50 states and the confines of injustice were giving way.

After 8 years of taking historic strides towards the expansion of kindness and equality to every United States resident, we had to say goodbye to one of the most revolutionary leaders of our time, and say hello to his opposite. The 2016 election fueled an increase of hate crimes by 23.3%. Since Donald Trump has been in office, white supremacy has made a prominent impact on our daily lives. Just one year after Trump was elected, at least a dozen white supremacist rallies had taken place. It is truly baffling to hear and see of these rallies, that we normally only hear of in history class, making headline news. Perhaps, this is due to the, currently neglected, presidential responsibility of terminating unfairness and outright hatred.

Even though the face of the United Sates is a tacky celebrity who does not necessarily dismiss acts of hatred, we can keep moving forward. The progression does not have to come to halt, despite what several white supremacists, armed with MAGA gear, would like to think.

We must carry on the traditions set into our country that fight for equality for all. We must no longer allow those who benefit from the president’s lack of compassion and kindness to steer us in the wrong direction. Stand up and speak your voice peacefully, with passion and strength. Together, everything we have fought for in the past 8 years can continue to flourish. Humanity is not yet too far gone, and it is up to us to progress even farther and strive for a world absent of hatred.
