Top Google Searches of 2017

By: Kristian Konstantinov     Feb. 13, 2018

2017 had many interesting trends, but what do people search for the most on google? You would be surprised by what people’s interests are when it comes to searching. Google collects user data and what has been searched, so it lets you see the top searched items on google and sometimes there are some interesting things to be seen.

When it comes to top search terms the 3 most popular searches were Hurricane Irma, iPhone 8, and iPhone X. People like apple enough to probably be checking pictures of the iPhone X and 8 every 5 minutes, and dream for a $999 base price phone. Do you think 13 reasons why or the fidget spinner were more popular? According to google 13 Reasons Why was the 6th most searched item and fidget spinners were in 8th place. So now that we know what people waste their time on let’s get to the individual categories of searching.

When it comes to consumer tech the most popular searches were iPhone 8, iPhone X, Nintendo Switch, Samsung Galaxy S8, Xbox One X, Nokia 3310, Razer Phone, Oppo F5, OnePlus 5, and the Nokia 6. I’m gonna bet that you have only heard of the first 5 pieces of technology, or probably only heard of, or have no clue of the existence of the last 5.

The most searched for movies were IT, Wonder Woman, Beauty and the Beast, Logan, Justice League, The Fate of the Furious, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Dunkirk, La La Land, and Thor: Ragnarok. We have all probably heard of or watched these movies because people are interested more in movies than technology.

When it comes to news, North Korea isn’t as important as it thought being placed in 6th place right behind the price of bitcoin. Yes, that is right, more people were thinking about a cryptocurrency than North Korea. The top news was Hurricane Irma, the Las Vegas shooting, and the solar eclipse.

Do you need a new car? Well according to google searches I can tell you what was the most popular. In order the most searches for car brands were Ford, Lexus, Kia, Toyota, Honda, Buick, Acura, Tesla, Hyundai, and Dodge.

Under searches about calories there are a few interesting ones. First there is the Unicorn Frappuccino, which was the item that got the most number of searches for calories. I am surprised it’s on there considering that it was a limited run and obviously has lots of calories. In second place of calorie searches it is the Grand Mac. McDonalds also has 2 more items in the top 10, apparently people who visit McDonalds are calorie counters.

Have you ever searched “How To…” do something on google? Well the most popular “How to…” searches were how to make slime, how to make solar eclipse glasses, how to watch the solar eclipse, how to watch Mayweather vs McGregor, how to buy bitcoin, how to freeze your credit, how to solve a rubix cube, how to make a fidget spinner, how to cook a turkey in the oven, and how to screen record. So I learned that if you were going to Thanksgiving and the Turkey was bad then the host was more interested in how to make a fidget spinner and how to make slime.

Now that you know what were the most popular google searches of 2017 and are bored out of your mind reading this article I will conclude here: At least you know more now than when you started reading this article.
