Top 5 Trendiest Sporting Events

2017 was a year filled with many types of sporting events all over the world. From cycling, to tennis, sports are a very popular part of today’s society whether to watch or participate in. Last year, the greatest athletes competed at the highest level at the sports they trained for all their lives, to get a shot at winning it all.

1. Wimbledon
Tennis is a very popular sport across the world, so it is no surprise that the trendiest sport topic in 2017 was the Grand Slam tennis tournament, known as Wimbledon. It took place on July 3rd and ended on the 16th. The event was located in Wimbledon, London and was split into four different groups, each competing for a Grand Slam title. In the end, Roger Federer won men’s singles and Garbine Muguruza took home the women’s singles championship.

2. Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is the final game of an NFL season to decide the best team in the league. In 2017 the Super Bowl was viewed across the globe, however most of its views came from the USA. Around 33% of all Americans watched this intense game meaning 111.3 million people tuned in to see the New England Patriots play the Atlanta Falcons. The game was a lopsided blowout for the Falcons in the first half, but the Patriots came back to win in a thrilling game for the ages.

 

3. Mayweather vs McGregor Fight
The professional boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor was easily the most popular and well-known fight in 2017. The two incredible fighters went at each other on August 26 in Paradise, Nevada. The fight went on for 10 rounds, ending in a Technical Knock Out, with McGregor losing. It happened to be the second highest pay-per-view buy rate in history, with each fighter gaining over 100 million dollars from the fight.

4. Tour de France
The 104th edition of the Tour de France was a 3540-kilometer race. It began on July 1st in Germany, and ended on July 23rd in Paris. 22 teams consisting of 198 riders entered the 21-stage race that spanned all across France and parts of Germany. The race ended with a victory for Chris Froome of Britain from Team Sky.

5. World Series
The series that brought an end to the 2017 MLB season was a thrilling 7 game series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros. It began on October 24th and ended November 1st. Each game took place in either teams’ stadium with the Dodgers gaining the advantage of four games at home while Houston had three. The Astros won the final game bringing the first ever World Series championship to Houston.
