The Amazon Rainforest
Audrey Goff February, 13, 2017
The amazon rainforest is one of the largest tropical forests in the world. The rainforest is considered to be very beautiful, it has many animals and different plants that make up its ecosystem. The Amazon Rainforest stretches throughout South America from Brazil to Venezuela to Columbia and parts of Ecuador and Peru encompassing a billion acres of land. Sadly since 1978 over 750,000 kilometers (289,000 square miles) have been destroyed. Deforestation across the Amazon has been very heartbreaking.
People need oxygen to survive and the Amazon's trees and plants are responsible for providing more than 20% of the world’s oxygen. This is why the Amazon was given the nickname, Lungs of the Planet. But, sadly, due to humans, the planet is losing a lot of the forest. Deforestation can cause so many problems such
as pollution of the water and soil, soil
erosion, Malaria outbreaks ( from mosquitoes) a
loss of icy, higher levels of carbon dioxide in
the atmosphere, plant and animal are in danger
also global warming. The government as well as
individual people are responsible for
destroying the rainforest.
The Brazilian government thought it would be
a good idea, back in the 1970s, to integrate
the rainforest with civilization and created 9000 miles worth of roadways right through the rainforest. To do this the forest was cleared and countless trees were destroyed. This is ridiculous, people are not caring about the world's oxygen could go out due to us taking down all the trees. We need to make a difference and help the world and the Amazon . In 2017 we can all make a difference.
Your question may be why should we help the rainforest? The answer is Currently, the Amazon is a carbon sink, meaning it stores carbon dioxide and prevents it from entering the atmosphere and fueling climate change. Deforestation, on the other hand, releases that carbon into the air, making global warming worse. Because of this, deforestation accounts for about 10 to 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Losing the Amazon means more carbon emissions and a warmer world. No matter how far from the region you live, the Amazon plays an important role in all of our lives, and we all play a role in protecting the homes of thousands of people and some of the world’s rarest wildlife.
