Fisker Emotion: Fisker's newest electric car company. Can it give Tesla and other EVs a run for their money?

In the automotive world Henrik Fisker, a Danish car designer, is one of the most famous designers of high end cars. A few of the better known cars from Fisker are the BMW Z8, the Aston Martin DB9, and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage among them but most of all he has owned a few of his own companies, producing cars like the Fisker Tromonto and the Fisker Karma. Fisker Karma was a plug-in hybrid car with a GM 2L 4-Cylinder and a 20.1 kWh battery pack. This is important because although he has made excellent cars, any companies he has owned have eventually been sold off for bankruptcy or almost bankrupted.

It makes you wonder how this car will be any different. All throughout 2017 Fisker had been posting about the Fisker Emotion on Twitter and the website of his new company, Fisker Inc. and officially unveiled at CES 2018 in January. On the outside it looks like no other and on the inside, it is one of the best, most futuristic, unique, and luxurious cars on the market. Now let’s start with off with the exterior of the Emotion.

It is no small car with a wheelbase
of 3018.5mm, a total length of
5085mm, and a height of 1465mm. It is
made of aluminum with many touches of
carbon fiber around the exterior. It
looks like a tiger prowling and
striking for its prey with the
sloping roof and the short front hood.
The very aggressive front styling
with a touch of Aston Martin design
for the back and the 24-inch wheels
make it look even better. Some design
aspects are functional like the Lidar in the front grill. The most eye-catching feature is probably the new butterfly doors. They go upwards and make it look like nothing else on the road.

Doors and Design aside the interior is one of the best that money can buy. It is all full of quality materials like Leather, Aluminum, and Carbon Fiber Trim. It has everything you could ever think off. Including Reclining rear seats.

The driver’s seat is a comfortable place to be, it has all the luxury elements plus much more. It has a Huge Vertical screen surrounded by great hand stitched leather, on top of the huge screen there is another horizontal screen. That is not all with the screens, the driver also has another horizontal screen as a gauge cluster.

If you do not watch enough TV at the house then you will learn to enjoy the Fisker Emotion's back seats, along with a screen to control climate controls and such, you can order a 27" IPS curved screen to watch more television. In addition to the reclining and heated seats, it is a good place to stay. When someone asks you if you would rather have a small house or a car you know what I'm choosing. It’s just a pleasant place to be.

On top of it all it has one of the best array of technologies you can get in any car. When it gets released it can have the ability of full level 4 autonomous driving enabled through a future update. If you don't know autonomous driving has 5 levels starting at 0. Level 0 is no assist while Level 5 allows the car to fully be able to drive and control itself with no driver input. Level 4 means that the car can drive itself almost fully, but it might occasionally need driver input when in situations with no road lines or other unknowns. For example, if you were on a dirt road. Level 4 is the highest anyone can go at the moment because the car has to have a complex AI, which is technology no one possesses at the moment.

The questions you may ask are, "is it fast?" and "how does it compare to a tesla?". As an electric car the battery, drive train, range, acceleration, and charging are the most important. This car has an overall range of 400+ miles, Tesla at the moment has about 310 miles with their 100 kWh battery pack. Compared to the Emotion with all new special designed batteries that no other company possesses, that also enable 125 miles of range and 9 minutes of charging, which is an accomplishment on its own. Preference is also good with all-wheel drive and electric motors producing 575 kW or approximately 780 HP. The entire drive train makes it a beast on the road and the drag strip, with a top speed of 161mph and a 0-60 time of less than 3 seconds. The interior is more resembling of a Bentley as opposed to the Tesla, which is more like a Honda Civic with half the options on it.

If you have fallen in love with this car, just wait for the pricing. First, you cannot go and buy this car right now. Fisker estimates that it will be available late 2018 or early 2019 if an automotive company agrees to produce it for them. For now, you have the option to put a $2,000 deposit to reserve your place for the car which is better than the $50,000 for the Tesla Roadster deposit or $250,000 for the founder’s edition of the roadster.

In total the Fisker Emotion will run you $129,995 new before options which is a lot for a new company that hasn't shown off its reliability and proven itself but, in the end, it may not seem as expensive as it should be. When Tesla launched their first car in 2010, the first-generation Tesla roadster at $129,000 which had a 55 kWh battery pack, 2 seats, was based on the Lotus Elise chassis. The tesla P100D has better acceleration as of now but lacks in every other aspect and costs $140,000 before options, that easily bring it up to $160,000 making it a very expensive car that is not luxurious. In 2018 many new electric cars will be released including the new Audi Etron SUV that will have a 95 kWh and cost about 50k not including the tax credit.

Is this car the right fit for you? That is a decision only you can make. I personally love this car, and I hope that more other cars like this get released. But if I had the money I would skip the wait and just buy myself a P100D to enjoy. I hope the next years are good for electric cars and more competition between the different manufacturers for it. This is the future, and it just depends if you will on board with it or not.
