Nailed it 2017
By: Gabrielle Sterba February 9, 2017
Throughout 2017 a lot of strange occurrences happened. Some of them being on your nails. These nail styles encouraged many regretful occurrences within the nail community. So, what were some of these questionable nail trends?
Aquarium nails have existed for quite a while in this current century. Dating back to 2015 when these nails first gained some attention. After a bit that attention died down. These nails floated about for a bit until a youtuber by the name of DeniseJohn65 started posting videos about them. More and more were inspired not only by DeniseJohn65 but by others such as Absolute nails. Soon this style got around to big name YouTuber SimplyNailogical, who created her own version of these nails with a snowman snow globe nail look. After this video this nail technique has been left to roam around in the depths of Instagram and on Pinterest.
Not only did aquarium nails make the rounds in 2017, but so did succulent nails. This nail look seems to be popularized for 2017 from an account on Instagram by the name of Arozona. From here many have been inspired to make their own version of these nails, all seemingly millennials. Just like with aquarium this style is not anything new. Seeing as many of these looks have been done in 2016 and some in 2015. Well these are much better compared to the fur nails that came out of 2016. Once again, this nail look has been roaming around in the depths of Instagram and Pinterest, where they shall remain until a big name nail personality or fashion show comes and popularizes this look in mainstream media.
So let’s stop talking about very obscure nail trends and start talking about a more mainstream set of nails that was not only popularized in 2017 but is still being done to this day. Stiletto nails. Obnoxiously long nails that can stab an eye or can even break flesh if the wearer of these nails so desired. These nails are typically the associated with the grunge phase that was popular in the 90’s. Despite these associations this has not stopped many people from tripling their natural nail size. These acrylic nails have not lied low in the depths of Pinterest but have made their way into many famous nail salons where they’ll stay for the foreseeable future.
2017 was quite weird. Especially since strange nail trends such as these were popularized once again in just 365 days. In comparison to 2016 where the 100 layer of nail polish challenge/trend and scorpion nails (with real dead baby scorpions) were present, 2017 could’ve been a lot weirder in the nail community. Looking back at this year it seems like the makeup community has taken the weird trophy instead of the nail community this time around. Despite anything though, at least the nail artists were happy and content with their work and the wearers with their nails, and that is all that matters.
