More Than Just Our President

Since Donald Trump’s inauguration as the President of the United States on January 20, 2017, the bombardment of criticisms from the media has not ceased. Making fun of the current president has always been a trend but with Trump, we have taken it to a completely new level. It is clear that Trump is one of the most unpopular U.S. presidents of all time. Donald went from businessman to President and now, he has even ascended that… he’s become a meme.
Of my favorites is the Trump draws anything meme, which came from Trump holding up executive orders after signing them and people replacing it with whatever they please, such as a childish drawing of a cat or a sick collection of Pokémon cards. Anything being able to be placed there leaves a lot of room for creativity and our community here on the internet definitely takes advantage of that.

This next meme plays on his iconic last name, Trump. His family’s original surname was Drumpf and this fact was widely popularized on the TV show ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’. The time upon which the change from Drumpf to Trump occurred is unknown, but it may have happened when Donald’s grandfather, Friedrich Drumpf, arrived in the U.S. in 1885 where he was processed as “Friedr. Trumpf”. Trump haters immediately latched onto this upon its discovery, but it comes back to bite them in the ass when Trump supporters use it against them as their own to mock liberals(like when they accused Trump of having dementia when he drank a glass of water with two hands).

Back in August, the solar eclipse captivated many people across the country including our President, who graciously blessed us with the gem of him looking at the eclipse without eyewear.  This immediately caught the eye of the media and memes followed, since eyewear was made a huge deal for the event, as staring directly at the sun tends to hurt your eyes.
Trump is especially known for his activity on twitter and one of the tweets that got the most flack was one containing the word ‘covfefe’. The tweet came late at night and said, “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.” No one quite knows what this means, but this of course does not stop us from making fun of it and in fact, the mistake warrants it.
Donald has merely passed his first year of four (if he even makes it that far) as president and will surely give us more material to use for memes.
