The Importance of National Kindness Week

By: Tawni Parrish    Feb 10, 2018

Kindness week is a national event that is seen to be continually growing in popularity. The week encourages random acts of kindness, celebrating diversity, and improving upon communities through unique and individual ways. Schools, churches, businesses, organizations and many more participate and take advantage of the perfect opportunity to be extra kind. In the changing of times, this is especially important.

The world we live in is full of unkind things, and kindness week brings this to light. To not only put focus on this for a whole week, but make it a fun, nation-wide celebration is something quite extraordinary. Perspective is also a key factor, as different days of the week recognize and support different causes, events, or important things going on at that time. For example, orange is usually used to represent and bring awareness to bullying, and more importantly, the end of it.

On such a large scale, familiarizing communities with these issues is a large benefit in many ways-particularly, in schools. To bring students a reason to take a step back and remember that there is more to the world, is perhaps the most important aspect of the entire week. Especially growing up in this time, it is critical for this age group to be shown the good of the world. Children and teenagers need to be aware and proactive, and highlighting this should be a tradition that continues.

To create a culture of kindness would be a

beautiful thing, and any steps we can take in

that direction are incredibly important. To be

kind can not only take such minimal effort, but

it is free. This concept should be so much more

common than it is, and the key is to start

somewhere. Through events like this, people come

and grow together, and opportunities like that

should never be missed. Help celebrate National

Kindness Week in your community, but more importantly, be kind in all the little ways possible. Hold the door open for a stranger. Smile at somebody in the hallway. Make new friends and help to lift others. While these things may seem small, they are all it takes. Start a kindness movement, and step-by-step, this change will be spread.

Kindness is a necessity, and this week brings people a reason to smile. We must not only continue the tradition but improve upon it and find more ways to encourage things like it. We cannot stop here. There is so much good to be found when we truly look, and sometimes people need a little push in the right direction. Let’s keep the culture growing!
