Fashion Trends of 2017 and Their Retro Comeback
By: Taya Fierro Feb 5 2018
The fashion trends of 2017. You could say that the year was definitely bringing retro back but in a good way. While we all wish we could have Justin Timberlake’s wavy blonde ramen noodles hair, 2017 focused on more of the Friends and Clueless aspects of the 90s.

Now, if you’re uncultured in anyway let me give you a little insight on what Friends and Clueless is about. Friends is a 1990s television show that focuses on the lives of 6 middle age adults trying to get through life with help from each other. Clueless is a high school-based movie about a girl named Cher who thinks she knows a lot and tries to sound smart. She tries to help people but ends up messing things up. It’s a 90s movie though, so of course it has a happy ending.
The 90s Clueless style consisted of a plaid, school girl skirt with a shirt and matching blazer. It’s a little more modern today. We take a baggy shirt and tuck it into the plaid school girl skirt, with black tights and a pair of converse. There are many aspects of the 90s, but many didn’t make that big of a comeback in 2017, however not all is lost because we have the quirky Capri pants with a crop top that many were sporting as an everyday outfit featuring, yet again, converse.
Clothes are always nice but there’s more to fashion than just clothes. There’s the accessories, hair, and makeup that pull the entire ensemble together to make a beautiful masterpiece. Well, at least in your eyes anyway.

Now the year 2017 may not have had anyone with a hair style named after them, like the iconic Rachel green bob cut, but we had some pretty epic hairstyles. We had the down hawk that mostly edgy teenage girls wore to either look emo or rebellious. Then there was the messy bun that girls claimed to make them look like trash but that actually didn’t. And of course, last but not least, we have the Dutch braids that all the popular girls wore with their tidied tees and pants, that were way to tight.

Girls aren’t the only ones that were concerned with looking good in 2017. Let me tell you there were some pretty fine-looking gents in 2017.

The typical outfit of a 2017 male mostly consisted of ripped jeans and/or jogger pants with a t-shirt to go with those jogger pants. A leather jacket was added to go with their ripped jeans. With these ensembles, you would usually spot a guy at this time sporting convers, vans, Nikes, and Jordan’s if you were that “cool” (AKA rich), and, of course they all had either the jerks side Mohawk that made them look like a jerk, or the messy long hair- usually tied into a man bun. And last but not least, we had the cool kid who sagged his pants way to low and thought it was cool to lean extremely far and walk like he had a load in his pants.

Although some of the choices made for clothing during 2017 were questionable, I love that the older decades are coming back with our modern twist. I can’t wait to see what we come out with in 2018.
